Sexual Harassment Training: A Guide To California AB 1825 Compliance

Los Angeles sky scrapers

What is AB 1825 and who needs to comply with it?

In 2004, California mandated that all persons in a management position supervising more than 50 employees be required to take a sexual harassment course (AB-1825) to provide training in proper workplace behavior. Governor Schwarzenegger signed this law in effect as a preventative measure to guard against harassment in the workplace.

This law clearly defines the nuances of what it means to be in compliance with the regulations.

Some of the key features include:

1. At least two hours of classroom or other effective interactive training and education regarding sexual harassment.

2. Training must be presented by educators with knowledge and expertise in the prevention of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

3. Additional classes must be completed every 2 years thereafter.

4. Courses can be web-based or face to face classroom training.

If you have more than 50 employees and have offices in the state of California, then you are required to provide sexual harassment training for your team. Failure to do so and to further provide training every 2 years can leave your company vulnerable to expensive sexual harassment lawsuits.

With these stringent guidelines, the state of California is making a commitment to maintaining respectful, productive work environments by educating authority figures about professional and responsible communication in the office.

How can your business comply with AB 1825?

Does your business have more than 50 employees? Do you need to connect your managers to sexual harassment prevention training? You can comply by offering training in one of two ways, in person training or online training. Here are the pros and cons of each:

  In Person Training Online Training
